Val Kilmer, Star of ‘Batman Forever,’ Dies at 65
Val Kilmer, the prolific American actor known for his iconic roles in “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “The Doors,” has passed away at the age of 65.
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, told NEW YORK TIMES that the cause of death was pneumonia, complicated by his previous battle with throat cancer.
His acting career spanned decades, with a filmography that showcased his versatility and range. From his early days as a stage actor to his breakout role as the cocky fighter pilot “Iceman” in “Top Gun,” Kilmer established himself as a talented and charismatic performer.
“He has the aura of a man who was dealt his cosmic comeuppance and came through it,” wrote Variety about Kilmer’s documentary “Val,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. “He fell from stardom, maybe from grace, but he did it his way.”
Kilmer’s career was marked by both blockbuster hits and smaller, independent films. He played the lead role of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors” and took on the iconic role of Batman in “Batman Forever.”
In recent years, Kilmer had been open about his health struggles, including his battle with throat cancer. Despite these challenges, he continued to act, reprising his role as “Iceman” in the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.”
“Instead of treating Kilmer — and, indeed, the entire notion of Top Gun — as a throwaway nostalgia object, he’s given a celluloid swan song that’ll stand the test of time,” wrote GQ about Kilmer’s performance in the film.
On his website, Kilmer reflected on his life and career, saying, “I’ve led a magical life. For more than half a century, I have been honing my art, no matter the medium.”
Kilmer is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
