Trump Slams 90% Duty on Chinese Small Parcels
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order hiking duties on small packages from China from 30% to 90%, aiming to curb the influx of affordable products. This move is set to disrupt the import of popular low-cost goods, particularly from Chinese-founded online retailers Shein and Temu.
According to AFP, the new 90% duty rate will take effect on May 2, alongside a significant tariff hike on Chinese goods from 34% to 84%.
Last week, Trump cancelled the duty-free exemption for goods valued at $800 or below from China.
Initially, the White House planned a 30% duty rate or $25 per item, increasing to $50 after June 1. However, these rates have been revised to 90% or $75 per item starting May 2, and $150 after June 1.
China at the time responded with fury to the move, accusing the United States of “politicizing trade and economic issues and using them as tools.”
In February, Trump initially scrapped the customs exemption but reversed the decision due to logistical disruptions.
