Tinubu Approves Luxurious Retirement Package For Military Chiefs, Generals
President Bola Tinubu has approved a new retirement package for military service chiefs and top-ranking officers, offering lavish benefits.
The Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (HTCOS) for Officers and Enlisted Personnel in the Nigerian Armed Forces, signed into law on December 14, 2024, outlines the benefits.
According to the document, the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Staff will receive a bulletproof SUV or its equivalent as a retirement package. The vehicle, along with a backup vehicle, will be replaced every four years and maintained by the Armed Forces.
“The following benefits shall be applicable: One bullet-proof SUV or equivalent vehicle to be maintained by the Service and to be replaced every four years. One Peugeot 508 or equivalent backup vehicle,” the document states.
Lieutenant Generals and their equivalents will receive $20,000 annually for foreign medical treatment, with higher allowances for the Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs.
“For other senior officers such as lieutenant generals and equivalents, they are entitled to two Toyota Hilux vehicles or one Toyota Land Cruiser, along with $20,000 annual medical treatment, two cooks, two stewards, four residential guards and two drivers,” the document adds.
Retired generals will also enjoy benefits including domestic aides (cooks, stewards, and gardeners), residential guards, and personal assistants.
The package also provides for other senior officers, including Major Generals, Brigadier Generals, and Colonels.
Major Generals and Brigadier Generals will receive a Toyota Land Cruiser or equivalent, $15,000 annual medical treatment, domestic staff, and residential guards.
One-Star Generals will receive $10,000 annually for medical care, a Toyota Camry or equivalent, and similar domestic and security arrangements.
Colonels and their equivalents will receive a Toyota Corolla or equivalent and free medical care within Nigeria.
“For officers of one-star rank (Brig. Gen.): One Toyota Camry or equivalent car of the same value; One service driver; two residential guards; One orderly and free medicals in Nigeria and abroad to the tune of $10,000 per annum,” the document states.
