‘The Mistake I Regret the Most’: Bill Gates Reflects on ‘Miserable’ Divorce from Melinda
In a candid interview with The Times, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates opened up about his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates, describing it as “the mistake I regret the most.”
The 69-year-old billionaire acknowledged the profound challenges of ending their 27-year marriage, stating that the separation was “miserable for both Melinda and me for at least two years.”
Gates emphasized the unique bond they shared, highlighting the significance of their joint achievements and family life. “There’s something extraordinary about spending your entire adult life with one person,” he reflected. “The shared memories, the depth of what you’ve accomplished together, and having childrenāit’s all quite special.”
He also noted that while he was already successful when they met, the significant milestones in his career occurred during their time together, with Melinda standing by him throughout.
The couple, who announced their split in May 2021 and finalized their divorce in August of the same year, co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a leading philanthropic organization. Gates expressed his disappointment over Melinda’s decision to step away from the foundation in 2024, describing it as “disheartening.”
Reflecting on his parents’ 45-year marriage, Gates admitted he aspired to a similar lifelong partnership. He acknowledged challenges in balancing work and family time, noting that while he spent more time with their children than his father did, Melinda still took on the majority of parenting responsibilities. “We had a wonderful time,” he added.
Despite the emotional toll of the divorce, Gates and Melinda continue to co-parent their three adult childrenāJennifer, Rory, and Phoebeāand maintain contact through family events. Gates also shared that he is currently dating Paula Hurd.
Melinda French Gates has also spoken about the challenges of their separation, describing the end of their marriage as “a painful and horrible experience.” However, she has expressed that life post-divorce has been “wonderful,” highlighting her new opportunities and personal growth.
