Senate in Closed-Door Session Over Rivers State Emergency Rule

The Senate has gone into an emergency session to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s request for constitutional approval to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The session was prompted by a correspondence from the President, which was read at the start of the plenary.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele raised a motion under Order 1(b) to prioritize the request, but Senator Seriake Dickson interrupted, citing concerns about the procedure. Dickson had previously expressed reservations about the emergency rule on television, which was noted by the Senate President.
After a brief clarification, Dickson pointed out that according to Order 133, the Senate President must brief lawmakers on the circumstances surrounding the proclamation in a closed session.
The Senate then dissolved into a closed-door session to discuss the matter further.
