Satellites to Phone: SpaceX to Launch Beta Test for Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell Service

SpaceX is set to commence beta testing for its Starlink Direct-to-Cell service on January 27, 2025. This innovative service aims to provide seamless cellular connectivity across the globe, eliminating traditional dead zones.

The Direct-to-Cell feature enables existing LTE-compatible phones to connect directly to Starlink satellites, functioning as “cell towers in space.” This allows users to access text, voice, and data services without the need for additional hardware or software modifications.

Initially, the beta phase will support text messaging, with plans to expand to voice and data services in the future. The service is designed to work wherever there is a clear view of the sky, ensuring connectivity in remote and previously unreachable areas.

In preparation for this rollout, T-Mobile has opened registration for customers interested in participating in the beta program. The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate satellite technology into existing mobile networks, thereby extending coverage to areas lacking traditional cell towers.
