Oborevwori challenges Corps Members on Patriotism, Unity


Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, has charged Corps members to be patriotic and promote the core values of the scheme toward national unity and integration.

Oborevwori gave the charge at the swearing-in of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course for Corps members deployed to the State on Friday at NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

Represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Rt Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, he congratulated the corps members on the successful completion of their academic pursuits which qualified them to be enlisted into the national service.

Oborevwori lauded the National Youth Service Corps for the effective management of the scheme in promoting national unity and cohesion.

He said it was the responsibility of the corps members as future leaders to contribute their quota in salvaging the nation by shunning all forms of social vices which could militate against the growth and development of the country.

Oborevwori said: “The NYSC has achieved much through the implementation of its programmes nationwide and I commend managers of the scheme, past and present, for keeping the flame and spirit of national unity and integration, alive.

“It is your responsibility as future leaders, to help salvage this country, to realize the fulfillment of our collective aspirations as a people, we should be ready to eliminate ethnicity, religious fanaticism, corruption, drug abuse and other social vices, which had hitherto hindered our development.

“This three weeks training is aimed at accelerating national development and unity through inculcation of the virtues of selfleness, humility, sacrifice and dedicated service to the nation,” he said.

The Governor further assured the corps members of adequate security and protection in any part of the state all through their service year and beyond.

“In pursuance of our policy of embarking on a meaningful people-oriented government, I wish to assure you that my administration will always protect you and ensure that you are safe wherever you are.

“It is my wish that this one year of national service in Delta State should be the finest of your memoir,” he added.

NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Olusegun Alao, expressed gratitude to the state government for fulfilling its promises to the scheme in the state as regards providing enabling environment for corps members, among other promises.

“I wish to bring again to the notice of His Excellency some of the problems still confronting the scheme, a combination of which affects the smooth implementation of our programmes. ”

He listed the needs of NYSC in Delta to include a central office/secretariat, construction and completion of perimeter fencing at the camp,” he said.

A total of 2,227 corps members, comprising of 671 males and 1,556 females, were sworn in.
