Nwaka Celebrates Birthday With Inmates of Ogwashi-Uku Prisons, Donates Items For Recreational Activities
Respites came the way of the inmates of Ogwashi-Uku prisons in Aniocha South local government area as the Member Representing Aniocha South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Angela Nwaka donated several items to enhance their wellbeing and promote recreational activities in the prison yard.
The donations were to commemorate the birthday celebration of Hon Nwaka who chose to fete with the inmates as part of her service to humanity and in keeping with biblical injunctions to feed the poor and the needy.
Aside the food, cakes, assorted drinks and detergents, other donated items by the Lawmaker were in response to the request by the inmates who passionately appealed for the items to enhance the day to day activities in the prison yard.
The items include sewing machines, tailoring learning materials, mowers, footballs for soccer and a high capacity battery to power the generating set that supply electricity in the area.
Hon Nwaka also promised to take up the payments of all the convicts of Aniocha South origin who had the option of fines caveat upon conviction, but could not afford the money, hence their continuous stay in the prison yard.
Addressing the inmates, the lawmaker who is the Chairman, House Committee on Education said prison is a reformation center, maintaining that the inmates could emerge from the experience as better persons when given desired care and attention.
Hon Nwaka explained that because she always had passion for tailoring and fashion designs, the five sewing machines and accompanying materials for learning would enable the inmates to master the act of making clothes as instructors would be brought in time to time to teach them.
The Lawmaker reminded the inmates that they are in the prison not because they are the worst people on earth, but for a purpose already designed probably to keep them away from crimes and situations that could have been more disastrous to their lives.
Hon Nwaka who expressed concern over the high rates of crimes in the society particularly among the youth, admonished the inmates to never go back to crimes upon completion of their jailed terms, even as she sympathized with the few who may have been innocent of the crimes upon which they were convicted.
Speaking further in an interview, the Lawmaker thanked God for her life and promised to continue to serve God and humanity, assuring the people of Aniocha of her irrevocable commitment to providing the constituency, quality representation.
The Deputy Controller of Prison, Ogwashi-Uku, Mr Frank Okwonkor, expressed appreciation to Hon Angela Nwaka for celebrating her birthday with the inmates and commended her for the donations.
The high point of the ceremony were prayers and exhortations and cutting of birthday cake by Hon Nwaka with inmates who shared the same birthday month with her.
The Lawmaker and her entourage also visited an orphanage in Ogwashi-Uku with food and other items to fete with the inmates where she stressed the need for a better life and care for the orphans.
