NDDC Donates 4,800 Desks And Chairs To Public Schools, Mobility Items To Physically Challenged In Edo State


The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC has donated Desks and Chairs to some public schools across the 18 local government areas of Edo State with a promise of sustained synergy that will enhance quality of teaching and learning in institutions across states of the Niger Delta region.

The distribution of the Desks and Chairs totaling 4,800 apiece, according to the Director Edo State Office of the NDDC, Dr Akwagaga Lelegima Enyia was a major milestone in the Commission’s efforts to providing a conducive learning environment for the pupils and students.

Dr Enyia stated that the NDDC recognizes the place of Education in the development of a country, stressing that over the years, the Commission had facilitated the provision of several physical and material resources to boost the quality of education in its mandate states.

She disclosed “In Edo State, the NDDC has constructed buildings including science and ICT laboratories, hostels and several blocks of classrooms in many primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. We have organized several capacity building programmes and workshops to boost the knowledge of the students and the teachers. We have embarked on several schemes of vaccinating school children against Typhoid and Hepatitis B across the state. Many of the schools in the state have been recipients of the NDDC’s donated notebooks and have participated in various Mathematics and Science competitions that were organized to empower and boost the morales of the winners”.

“The Presentation of four thousand, eight hundred (4,800) Desks and four thousand eight hundred (4,800) Chairs to benefiting schools at this event is in continuation of the Flag off exercise done by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Dr. Nsima Ekere in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The exercise is being carried out in selected government schools in the nine (9) states of the Niger Delta region”, Dr Enyia stated.

The Edo State Director of NDDC emphasized that the Commission have no doubt that the donated Desks and Chairs, will go a long way in making the children more comfortable in their studies, even as she charged all to take good care of the items and deploy them to the use of the children.

The Commissioner representing Edo State on the governing board of the NDDC, Hon. Saturday Idehen Uwuilekhue, represented by his Special Assistant, Mr. Charles Amadin, reiterated the commitment of the Commission in collaborating with relevant stakeholders towards promoting peace and development in the Niger Delta region, stressing that education was key in that regard.

The representative of the Acting Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Edo State, Dr. Joan Oviawe and the Head Teachers of Ologbosere Primary School in Ikpoba Okha LGA and Agboghidi Primary School in Oredo Local Government Area flanked by their pupils thanked the NDDC for the dedication and promised to put the items into good use.

In a related development, the NDDC has presented Mobility Items, including Wheel Chairs, Sensor guides, Magnifying Hearing Aids and Crutches to Physically Challenged persons in Edo State.

The Edo State Director of the Commission said they were meant to enhance the living conditions of the beneficiaries as the NDDC was concerned about their well being.

The President of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Edo State, Mr Henry Ebose on behalf of the others, appreciated the efforts of the NDDC and appealed to the Commission to employ Physically Challenged persons as staff.
