Mudashiru Obasa Returns as Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly
Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of former Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa’s return comes after his impeachment in February over allegations of corruption, a move that deepened the leadership crisis within the Assembly and caused a rift among party leaders in the state.
Despite his removal, Obasa’s supporters pushed for his reinstatement, ultimately succeeding as he reassumed the position during a plenary session.
Meanwhile, Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down amid the ongoing leadership turmoil, was immediately sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. Her swift nomination and confirmation reflect the Assembly’s efforts to stabilize its leadership ranks.
During the plenary session, which commenced at about 2:20 p.m., several lawmakers took turns to commend Meranda for her performance during her brief tenure as Speaker. Aro Moshood lauded her leadership, describing it as “positively life-transforming.” Kehinde Joseph, representing Alimosho II, added, “You have made history with your resilience and humility. Your time may be short, but you have written your name in gold.”
Meranda had assumed office on January 13, 2025, following Obasa’s impeachment. Despite her short time in the role, her leadership drew praise from colleagues, many of whom acknowledged her diligence and commitment to the Assembly’s legislative duties.
However, the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly remains unresolved. While Obasa’s reinstatement has restored some order, divisions persist within the Assembly and among party leaders, leaving the political landscape in a state of uncertainty.
