Manager, Pondi Visit Landslide Site at Tuomo Community
…Assures of Federal Government Intervention.
The Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator James Manager has assured the people of Tuomo community in Burutu Local Government Area that he will draw the attention of the Federal Government to the devastating landslide that occurred in the coastal community.
Senator Manager stated this when he and the Member representing Burutu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Julius Pondi, the PDP Chairman, Delta South Senatorial District, Prince Emma Agbaduba and the Commissioner for Energy, Barrister Newworld Safugha visited Tuomo community to have an on the spot assessment of the landslide site in the community.
He described the level of devastation caused by the landslide in the community as terrible stressing that something urgently must be done to assuage the plight of the community and those affected.
The Federal lawmaker who called on the federal government and all relevant agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the aid of the community maintained that the natural disaster could wash off the entire community.
Also speaking, the Member representing Burutu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Julius Pondi who expressed shock at the level of the landslide devastation in the community said he had directed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the contractor handling the Tuomo community shoreline protection project to furnish him with all relevant documents regarding the project for proper assessment.
Honourable Pondi who sympathised with the people of Tuomo community over the natural disaster stressed that he will move a motion on the floor of the House to draw the attention of the Federal government to the community for immediate action by relevant authorities .
The Federal Lawmaker said if something was not done urgently to remediate the community the landslide which had continued to increase since it occurred could expand to a more dangerous dimension.
Honourable Pondi said the people were already living in fear because of the landslide disaster hence the need for the federal government to act fast to stop further encroachment as there was fears that the entire community might be washed away with the rate at which it was going.
While advising those living around the landslide area to relocate to safer areas, Honourable Pondi said fear has gripped the people from going to fishing expedition because of the level of devastation caused by the landslide.
He assured that the people will not be abandoned at this critical time as efforts will be geared towards addressing the problem headlong in order for the people to live their normal lives devoid of fears that the coastal community could be washed away into the river.
