Lagos Assembly Impeaches Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Elects Mojisola Meranda as Speaker

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, January 13, 2025, impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The lawmakers cited multiple statutory and financial infractions, including accusations of mismanaging constituency funds and spending a staggering ₦17 billion on a gate for the assembly complex.

Following his impeachment, the lawmakers elected Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa I constituency, as the new Speaker. Meranda, who previously served as the deputy speaker, was chosen to lead the assembly in the wake of Obasa’s removal.

In response to the impeachment, armed security personnel have taken over the assembly complex and its environs to maintain order and prevent any potential unrest. The security presence includes members of the Nigeria Police Rapid Response Squad, the Department of State Services, and the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps.

Obasa’s impeachment comes weeks after he hinted at his interest in becoming the governor of Lagos State, a move that some political detractors viewed as a selfish aspiration. The allegations against him and his subsequent removal have sparked discussions about accountability and transparency within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
