Itsekiri Youth Body Raps Ijaw Youth Council Over 2019 Poll Statement


… Says Democracy Allows Any Qualified Aspirant To Contest.

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC) has stressed that constitutional provisions gave power to any qualified citizen to run hence all interested Itsekiri aspirants should prepare themselves for the polls.

The statement, followed a publication credited to the leadership of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Ogbe-ijoh, Warri South West local government Area, calling on Itsekiri aspirants in the forthcoming general elections to step down their campaigns for the 2019 elections.

The Chairman, INYC Warri South-West, Mr. Suru Diden, in a statement, said that for democracy to thrive people must be allowed to freely exercise their civil responsibilities which includes amongst others the right to vote and be voted for.

According to him, in view of democratic provisions, all aspirants are eligible to contest for any position but majority as in a democratic system will have their way.

He said, “Ordinarily, we would have ignored but for posterity, we are constrained since for democracy to function effectively education is the underlying factor as such there is need to properly educate Mr. Okosu and his co travellers. Needless to remind Mr. Okosu that democracy all over the world encourages the majority to decide who govern them”.

“Again it must be noted that in an elective position, the aspirant with the highest number of votes is declared winner. These deposition of attempting to undermine democracy must stop. Mr. Okosu should also advocate as such for the Urhobos in Burutu, Patani, Bomadi local government areas, & the Itsekiris in Uvwie, Sapele, Ethiope West LGAs, as they say what is good for the goose is good for the gander.” The statement read.
