Graduating Polytechnic Students Allege Management Extortions, Appeal For Okowa’s Intervention
Graduating Students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku have alleged heavy extortions by the management of the institution, expressing worries over a recent memo that jacked up the amount of several fees to be paid before collecting their certificates.
The students in a statement, said “The payments are part of requirements for clearance process before meeting up the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC for those in Higher National Diploma. The total money to be paid is too much and outrightly uncalled for considering the current economic situation in the country.”
The affected students, comprising both ND and HND finals, said “to pay a whooping thirty-four thousand naira for clearance in this present economic situation is too much and costly”, adding that the inclusion of endowment/eligibility fee of N10,000 which they don’t even know what it means was unacceptable.
“The increase in the fees for collection of original certificate and statement of result to N12,000 and N5000 respectively and the increment of convocation fee from N3,000 to N6,000 are too much. Also worrisome is the management demanding for payment for the certificate when it is very glaring that the said certificate won’t be ready for the students at this time of clearance”.
“The sad development also coincide with the recent payment of N3,000 by new intakes as part of their screening fee after paying acceptance fee. Some students were eventually screened out during the process. This is not to talk of the fine for late payment of School fees of N10,000 and so many others”, the students alleged.
They however appealed to the Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa and well meaning Deltans to quickly intervene and review the fees in a bid to make them affordable for both the graduating students and the entire students of the institution.
