Gabonese Striker Aaron Boupendza Dies in Fall from 11th Floor
Gabon international striker Aaron Boupendza has died at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of a building in China, where he played for Zhejiang FC.
The national football federation, Fegafoot, confirmed the news, saying “the Gabonese international died following a fall from the 11th floor of his building in China, where he was playing for Zhejiang FC.”
“Aged 28, Boupendza leaves us with the memory of a great striker who left his mark on the CAN (Africa Cup of Nations) in Cameroon.”
Fegafoot offered condolences to Boupendza’s family, stating, “Fegafoot and the entire Gabonese football family offer their sincere condolences to his biological family.”
Gabonese president-elect Brice Oligui Nguema also paid tribute, posting, “It is with immense sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese football.”
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding Boupendza’s death, with broadcaster Gabon 24 noting that the exact circumstances are still unclear.
Boupendza had a notable career, playing for clubs in France, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and Romania before joining Zhejiang FC in January. He was also the top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig in 2020-21.
