Funmilayo Ransom Kuti Biopic Nets N32m in Debut Weekend


The Nollywood biopic “Funmilayo Ransom Kuti” has achieved a remarkable debut of N32 million in its opening weekend following its release on May 17, 2024.

According to the Nigerian Box Office (NBO), the biopic not only topped the weekend box office charts but also set a new record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a biopic in Nigeria.

The movie, written by Tunde Babalola, directed and produced by Bolanle Austen Peters alongside other notable producers, tells the inspiring life story of the late Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a pioneering Nigerian educator, political reformer, women’s rights activist, and mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The film explores significant phases of Ransome-Kuti’s life, including her education, marriage, and revolutionary fight against colonialism and patriarchy.

It also highlights her pivotal role in creating the Abeokuta Women’s Union, which advocated for women’s rights and challenged colonial governance.

The biopic stars Kehinde Bankole, the 2024 best actress winner at the African Magic Viewers Choice Award event, and features features Yeni and Femi Kuti, the children of Afrobeats legend Fela Kuti, who have continued their father’s legacy in their own unique ways.

The premiere was attended by prominent figures, including Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos State, and the Ransome Kuti Family.
