FG Set to Disburse N4.8bn for HIV Treatment Amidst US Funding Cut Threats
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N4.8 billion for the treatment of HIV patients in Nigeria.
This development followed US plans to suspend financial assistance for HIV treatment and other health programs.
According to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, the approved funds will be disbursed within four months to ensure continuity of care for HIV patients, despite reduced international support.
“The approval would be delivered in four months to ensure that those who are HIV-infested are taken care of despite the contribution of partners,” Pate said.
In response to the US decision to cut funding, Pate emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to domestic financing for its health sector.
A committee comprising representatives from various ministries and the Nigeria Governors Forum has been established to develop a sustainability plan.
As Nigeria navigates this transition, it’s worth noting that the country requires an estimated $8 billion annually to effectively combat HIV/AIDS, according to Rep. Amobi Ogah, Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Control.
