FG Approves Additional Trucks of Cheap Rice to Address Protest Demands
The Federal Government has announced the distribution of additional 10 trucks of 50kg rice to each state, to be sold at designated centers for N40,000 per bag. This move aims to alleviate poverty and the high cost of living.
In response to the planned nationwide protest on August 1, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) emphasized that many of the protestors’ demands are already being addressed. President Bola Tinubu stated that he is advocating on behalf of the youth by tackling their grievances.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, briefed State House correspondents after the Council meeting. He highlighted the government’s measures to ensure food availability, including the distribution of rice to state governors for onward distribution to those in need.
Idris explained that the rice is being sold at approximately 50% of its cost price, with centers set up across all states for purchase. He noted that while initial supplies may not suffice, they represent necessary first steps, with more interventions planned.
The Minister also outlined broader initiatives to reduce food prices, including investments in agriculture and irrigation. These efforts are expected to lower food costs as the rainy season progresses and agricultural outputs increase.
In addition to addressing food security, the government has begun disbursing student loans, with provisions for over two million students. The aim is to ensure no student is left behind due to financial constraints.
Finally, Idris appealed to the public to reconsider the protest, citing the potential for violence and the government’s ongoing efforts to meet the needs of Nigerians in various sectors, including healthcare, infrastructure, and employment. He stressed that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, the government urges caution to prevent hijacking by unscrupulous elements.
