Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu and the Unsettled Dust in Ethiope Federal Constituency
By Ejiro Nomuoja, Esq.
The age-old adage, “A prophet is not respected in their homeland,” resonates strongly in the unfolding political dynamics within Ethiope Federal Constituency, Delta State.
Recent events, particularly a meeting convened by Chief Ighoyota Amori, exposes the crippling tension within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). At the center of this unfolding drama is an amazon, Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, whose rising political star has sparked admiration among many but also apparent unease in certain quarters.
Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the daughter of Chief James Ibori—arguably one of Delta State’s most influential political figures—has carved her own political path. Her strides in public service reflect not only her father’s legacy but also her dedication to charting a course defined by modern leadership and inclusivity. Her election to the House of Representatives signaled a generational shift, inspiring younger politicians while affirming the enduring influence of the Ibori political dynasty.
Chief Ighoyota Amori’s recent convening of PDP stalwarts to address Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s political intimidating influence highlights internal discomfort within the party. What should have been an opportunity for unity has instead exposed fractures, raising questions about the motivations behind the meeting.
Amori, once a key figure in the Ibori political dynasty, now appears to be working against its legacy. It is no secret that the Ibori political dynasty has been a cornerstone of Delta State politics since 1999. Many of those gathered at Amori’s meeting owe their political fortunes to the groundwork laid by Chief James Ibori. This raises a critical question: Why are former allies turning against a figure who embodies the continuity of that legacy?
His recent settlement by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as political adviser, adds another layer of intrigue to his actions. Many are left wondering why Amori, a beneficiary of the same political structure that propelled him to prominence, would engage in an exercise calculated to undermine Hon. Ibori-Suenu – “A daughter that calls him Father”.
On the issue at hand, it is best left to the courts to decide rather than come out and fight the daughter of the leader of the same political dynasty most of them benefitted from.
Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s popularity among constituents and former PDP faithful speaks volumes about the need for a rejuvenated political landscape. Unfortunately, the PDP is characterized with clinging to outdated structures, sidelining young and vibrant members who could bring fresh perspectives and energy.
Chief Amori’s actions, viewed by many as an attempt to maintain the old guard’s grip on power, is no match for the influence and appeal that Hon. Ibori-Suenu showcases. Her supporters, including many former PDP members, have vowed to stand by her as she continues to deliver on her promises of good governance and representation.
The dust in Ethiope Federal Constituency is far from settled. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu’s journey serves as a reminder that leadership is about service and inclusivity, not perpetuating the status quo.
As a new political landscape evolves in Delta, I remain resolute in living out the political legacy instituted by the greatest benefactor of all times, Chief James Onanefe Ibori.
