Delta State Government Makes Waste Bin More Affordable


…To Sanction Defaulting Residential, Business Premises

The Delta State Government has slashed the price of acquiring resident waste bin from N10, 000 to N5,000. The Government has also announced the reduction of the waste bin for business premises from N15,000 to N10,000.

According to a State Government directive, the reductions were part of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa sincere desire to provide an effective waste management mechanism and the dire need for a cost friendly waste bin for the proper disposal of municipal solid waste in the State.

The directive also implored the Ministry of Environment to develop a flexible payment plan for the benefit of all citizens and residents in the state.

The Governor’s directive was contained in a statement from the office of the State Commissioner for Environment, Barr. John Obukohwo Nani. The statement reads in part. “It is hereby announced for the information of the general public particularly Deltans that the State Ministry of Environment is using this medium to sensitize Deltans against the unwholesome practice of burning of waste and the ugly trend in which persons, organizations and business owners dispose their refuse indiscriminately along the street and highway thereby defacing the aesthetics of the Environment.”

The Commissioner of Environment, Barr John Obukohwo Nani noted that in order to check this ugly trend and ensure that the beauty and cleanliness of the environment was sustained and remarkably improve upon, “The state government is directing the general public, most especially persons, organizations and business owners to have a government waste bin for appropriate disposal of refuse by an accredited Private Sector Participants (PSP) waste collector to a government approved dump sites.”

Hon. Nani also requested all Local Government Councils, Waste Management Board, Delta State Capital Development Agency, State Sanitation Taskforce and other relevant authorities to monitor their areas and ensure that every residential, organizational and business premises acquires a government waste bin at the subsidized rates of N5,000.00 for residential homes and N10,000.00 for Corporate organizations, from their respective Local Government Council Secretariats or the Delta State Capital Development Agency, Asaba.

The statement urge the general public to take adequate advantage of the Governor’s benevolence and acquire the government waste bin as the State Ministry of Environment would from 1st November, 2017 apprehend residents and seal up business premises without the subsidized government waste bin, and would be brought before a special sanitation court headed by a magistrate and fined accordingly.
