Delta State Government Debunks Borrowing Allegations, Sets Record Straight
Delta State Government has refuted reports circulating on online media platforms alleging that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori borrowed N40 billion shortly after assuming office.
In a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza and released on August 27, 2024, the state government described the reports as misleading and capable of creating confusion.
According to the statement, the administration of Governor Oborevwori did not borrow N40 billion but instead guaranteed a loan facility of the same amount for the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to offset unpaid pension liabilities of retired local government personnel. The loan is repayable over a five-year period through direct debits to local government councils.
The statement also clarified that the reported N465 billion debt was accumulated by previous administrations and that Governor Oborevwori has been prudent in managing resources and adhering to loan repayment terms.
Osuoza appealed to the media to verify facts before publishing and reiterated the governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
