Delta Assembly Committee Submits Report on Local Government Law Amendment Bill


The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on local government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has submitted its report on a Bill to Amend the Delta State Local Government Law 2013.

Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon Alfred Martins, at plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, said a public hearing was held on the bill for inputs of stakeholders.

Hon Martins, who is the Deputy Chief Whip and Member Representing Warri North in the House, explained that there was no objection from the stakeholders as the proposed new law was a one line amendment as requested by the State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.

He said, “Mr Speaker, you will recall that the Delta State Local Government Amendment Bill 2024 was read the first time on Wednesday 27 November 2024, and on December 4th, the bill was read the second time and subsequently committed to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for further Legislative scrutiny.

“Mr Speaker, the Committee resolved for a public hearing which was held on the 10th of December with representatives of Directorate for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Delta State Chapter of ALGON and the State Ministry of Justice in attendance.

“Mr Speaker, after a thorough examination of the Bill, the Committee is of the view that the Bill is amended as shown in the annexure attached for the consideration of the House and passage”, Fred Martins stated.

The House adjourned further legislative action on the Bill to Tuesday 17 December, 2024.

Meanwhile, Hon Fred Martins has congratulated the Delta State House of Assembly Chapel for the success of the festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held on Wednesday.

Hon Martins who took the third Lesson taken from Isaiah 9: 6-7, said it was gratifying to be a part of the event, put together in the spirit of the season.

The Lawmaker stressed that festival of Nine lessons and Carols remains one of the most memorable traditions ahead of Christmas.
