Court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Indefinitely
The Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has questioned the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court over his alleged terrorism case, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the trial.
Kanu, who has been detained since June 2021, expressed his dissatisfaction with Justice Binta Nyako presiding over his case, stating that he does not recognize her authority over him.
On Trial resumption on Monday, Kanu emphasized that he was only present in court out of respect for the rule of law.
He said he was not happy with the decision of the chief judge who returned the case to Justice Nyako, insisting that the prosecution cannot prosecute him.
The IPOB leader insisted that Justice Nyako is biased over his case and should not preside over his case. He said poor knowledge of the court is affecting Nigeria.
Recall that, IPOB leader’s trial was previously stalled after Justice Nyako recused herself in September 2024, following Kanu’s loss of confidence in her handling of the case. However, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, reverted the file to Justice Nyako, prompting Kanu’s latest objection.
Kanu’s defense counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had requested that the case be transferred to a Federal High Court in the South-East, but this was not granted. The prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, pushed for a trial date, but Justice Nyako ultimately adjourned the case indefinitely, requesting a written application from Kanu’s defense team if they still insist on the recusal.
