Bill Gates to Visit Nigeria over Malnutrition Crisis


Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Gates Foundation, is set to visit Nigeria to engage with national and local leaders, youth, and partners to tackle pressing health issues, foster innovation, and enhance nutrition across Africa.

The foundation announced his visit in a statement released on Monday, September 2, 2024, outlining the focus of his meetings and discussions.

During his visit Today, Gates will connect with a diverse group of stakeholders, including national and local leaders, foundation partners, grantees, and innovators. The aim is to collaborate on solutions for critical issues in primary health care, agriculture, and nutrition, particularly in the face of economic challenges.

The Gates Foundation emphasized that Gates will participate in a pan-African virtual dialogue during his visit. This discussion will focus on combating malnutrition through integrated approaches in health, agriculture, and financial strategies. The dialogue will also feature Jon Batiste, a renowned musician, educator, and humanitarian.

Malnutrition remains a severe problem in Nigeria, with alarming statistics from the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Every hour, approximately 100 children under the age of five die from malnutrition in Nigeria, translating to about 2,400 child fatalities daily.

Recent data from the Global Hunger Trend highlights a troubling increase in child malnutrition. The proportion of malnourished children has risen from 9.3% to 15.9% over the past year. Last year, 35 million children under five were affected by malnutrition, with 12 million experiencing stunted growth, three million suffering from severe weight loss, and 23.5 million being anemic.

Efforts to address these issues have shown some progress, with a slight annual reduction in stunting rates of 1.4%. However, other malnutrition-related issues, such as child wasting and stunted growth, have continued to decline, indicating ongoing challenges in improving child health and nutrition.
