APC Condemns Igbuya’s Suspension, Says It’s An Affront To Democracy And Freedom Of Association
Following the shocking suspension of the immediate past Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya for three months by fellow Lawmakers, the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the action describing it as vindictive, affront to Democracy and freedom of association.
The position of the opposition party in the State was contained in a Press Statement issued on Thursday, September 27, 2018 by its Publicity Secretary, Barr. Ogheneluemu Sylvester Imonina, stating that APC and all discerning mind condemn the said action, as same ultra-vires the power of the House of Assembly.
The statement titled, “SUSPENSION OF RT. HON. MONDAY IGBUYA BY DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY: AN AFFRONT TO DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION”, reads below.
“The All Progressives Congress, Delta State Chapter condemns in totality the suspension of Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya by Delta State House of Assembly over concocted/purported allegation of financial misapplication. Though, the House has the Rules that govern conduct of her members, same ought not to be used arbitrarily against those who are not on the same page with the powers-that-be.
It could be recalled that on 11th day of May, 2017, Rt. Hon. Igbuya was removed as the Speaker of the House on the ground of allegation of high-handedness, without issues of financial misapplication raised as at them. Also, to further punish him, the House of Assembly stopped the payment of Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya’s entitlement as a legislator till date.
Meanwhile, in October, 2017, when PDP government heard that Rt. Hon. Igbuya was muting the idea of dumping PDP, the House of Assembly hurriedly set up a kangaroo committee to probe him. When the House could not confirm rumour of Hon. Igbuya defection, the committee fell into a state of political somnambulism.
In February, 2018, the House committee purportedly submmitted a hotchpotch of lies as a report but it was not acted upon until after the formal defection of Rt. Hon Igbuya to APC few days ago. Because of the towering political value of Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya, the House of Assembly maliciously/shamelessly suspended Hon. Igbuya on flimsy excuse of financial misapplication.
APC and all discerning mind condemn the said action, as same ultra-vires the power of the House of Assembly. The action of members of the House is vindictive, affront to Democracy and freedom of association. The House should therefore recall him, to avoid deprivation of Sapele L.G.A. right of representation in the House, and avoidance of legal fire works against her.”
