Alibaba Unveils New AI Model, Claims Superiority Over DeepSeek

Alibaba’s cloud unit has released an upgraded version of its Qwen 2.5 artificial intelligence model, dubbed Qwen 2.5-Max, which the company claims outperforms DeepSeek-V3, GPT-4o, and Llama-3.1-405B “almost across the board.”

According REUTERS report, the release of Qwen 2.5-Max comes on the heels of DeepSeek’s rapid rise to prominence, with its AI assistant and R1 model sparking concerns among investors about the huge spending plans of leading AI firms in the United States.

DeepSeek’s success has prompted a scramble among its domestic competitors to upgrade their AI models.

TikTok owner ByteDance recently released an update to its flagship AI model, claiming it outperformed Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s o1 in AIME, a benchmark test that measures AI understanding and response to complex instructions.

DeepSeek’s R1 model also reportedly rivals OpenAI’s o1 on several performance benchmarks. The company’s enigmatic founder, Liang Wenfeng, emphasized in a rare interview that achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) is DeepSeek’s primary goal.

“Large foundational models require continued innovation, tech giants’ capabilities have their limits,” Liang said, contrasting the high costs and top-down structures of large tech companies with DeepSeek’s lean operation and loose management style.

Liang also noted that DeepSeek “did not care” about price wars, sparked by the release of its V2 model last May, which led to significant price cuts by Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent.
