Address Escalating Insecurity, Delta Online Publishers Forum Urges Southern Governors

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has issued a passionate call to Southern Nigerian governors, urging them to take decisive action against the worsening security crisis in the region.

In a press release dated April 15, 2025, the forum expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in kidnappings, killings, and other violent crimes, often attributed to criminal elements disguised as herdsmen or hunters.

The DOPF criticized the perceived inaction of state governors, emphasizing their constitutional role as Chief Security Officers. The forum highlighted the governors’ authority under the Land Use Act, urging them to prioritize the safety of lives and property over political interests. “The continued silence or passive responses from our state governors is no longer acceptable,” the statement read.

Drawing inspiration from the Emir of Muri in Taraba State, Abbas Njidda Tafida, who recently issued a 30-day ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate the region, the DOPF questioned why Southern leaders have not taken similarly bold measures.

The Emir’s stance, captured in a viral video, has sparked discussions on the need for proactive leadership in addressing security challenges.

The forum also pointed to recent tragedies, such as the killing of 16 individuals in Uromi, Edo State, and the abandonment of farms in Delta State due to fear of attacks.

These incidents, they argued, underscore the urgent need for action to restore public confidence in governance and prevent further loss of lives and livelihoods.

The DOPF called for collaboration with traditional rulers and community leaders but cautioned against engaging individuals with questionable loyalties. They urged governors to act decisively against any betrayal of public trust by traditional authorities.

Referencing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to state leaders to take ownership of security in their domains, the forum reminded Southern governors of their primary responsibility to protect lives and property. “The time for rhetoric is over; our people deserve peace, protection, and purposeful governance,” the statement concluded.
