By Iteveh Ekpokpobe
Delta State Chapter of the Sustainable National Party (SNP) has called on all eligible youths in Delta State to register in the ongoing INEC continuous voters registration and get their PVC ready to enthrone a youthful government come 2019.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary Comr. Umukoro Stanley, the party urge Deltans to harness the trending political consciousness by keying into the exercise.
The party also commended INEC for decentralising the registration exercise adding that is has made it easy for all eligible youths to be registered.
According to the statement, the decentralized exercise which provides for ward to ward registration of eligible voters defines the commission’s stand in promoting democracy.
“It is important for adults; those who are 18 years and above to register because the electoral law specifies that only those whose names are in the voters list are qualified to vote during elections. In other words, whoever intends to exercise his or her civic rights on Election Day must register as a voter. It is only then that he or she will be able to vote for candidates for elective positions.”
The party also frowned at news of under age registration on going in some states of the country describing it as sabotage to good governance.
He said, “a credible voters’ register is a prelude to free and fair elections. Voters registration helps to facilitate the credibility of the electoral process by preventing multiple voting. We must prevent cases of underage voting because only adults of voting age (18 years and above) are constitutionally allowed to vote.”
